If you lose one or more teeth, then replacing them right away is crucial. Otherwise, you run the risk of developing lost jawbone density, which can lead to further tooth loss. Other complications related to tooth loss include misalignment, embarrassment about your smile, and trouble eating. Fortunately, we can address the problem with implant technology. Frequently Asked Questions About Placing Dental Implants
Question: How do you place a dental implant?
Answer: After choosing the area for placement, the implant post will then be inserted surgically. The post is made using titanium, a biocompatible material that actually bonds with the jawbone like a natural root. Known as osseointegration, this process occurs over a period of three to six months.
Question: What makes a patient a viable candidate?
Answer: The patient should have a missing tooth, enough jawbone tissue to support the new tooth, and gums free of periodontitis. If the patient has lost jawbone tissue as a result of missing teeth, we may suggest a bone grafting procedure to strengthen the jawbone. We may also prescribe treatment to address any underlying periodontal problems, as periodontitis can mean implant failure.
Question: How long until you place the restoration?
Answer: After the healing period, we will add an abutment to the implant post. The abutment holds the restoration in place. We use a dental crown to complete the visible portion of the tooth. The crown will be custom-made to blend with your smile.
Question: What if I lost multiple teeth?
Answer: We can use multiple implants to secure a fixed bridge or denture, replacing multiple lost teeth or all of your teeth if necessary. If you have any questions then please contact our office today.
